Who Is A Guru?

The concept of guru is a mysterious one for Westerners. Too often we envision a bearded man in a loin cloth possessed of higher knowledge, perhaps sitting in a swamp like Yoda in Star Wars. Wisely, his knowldege is meted out to the worthy, one secret at a time.

Probably not. In fact, a guru or teacher is more akin to a good coach.

Like all good coaches, he or she has three distinct viewpoints that can help us advance our Yoga practice.  Read more

What got you into Yoga? When? Where? Why?

I first did Yoga back in the '80s when Yoga was just Yoga. There didn't seem to be so many varieties and flavors. After a long sabbatical, and a child, I started taking classes again as a stay-at-home mom. I ended up in a Bikram studio, The Tampa Bay Yoga Center. I found a community and fell in love with the practice all over again. Read more

Why Hot Yoga is Hot

In exploring the subject of hot yoga, we thought there is no better source than Dick Watts. He's been doing hot yoga for ten years.

"Full bore for ten years." he said. "I got on this schedule about when my kids learned to drive."

His weekly schedule includes five sessions of hot yoga, two sessions of ashtanga yoga and two sessions of kundalini yoga. Watts will be 63 in February.

Hot yoga is a series of poses done in a room that's heated. How hot? Depends on the class, but as hot as 105 degrees.
