What got you into yoga?

When I was in high school, one of my sisters practiced at an ashram near our home so sometimes I would go to class with her. It made me feel calm and peaceful and I loved the deep sleep I could sometimes drift into during savasana. What got you into Yoga?

In the early 90's, I was living on our sailboat in St. Maarten. With not a lot of space for stretching and exercising, I looked to fellow sailors in the anchorage. A woman who had been a teacher at the Kripalu Center was anxious to get a class together. We rounded up about 7 students and bartered a practice space in a local restaurant. We practiced four days a week from 7am to 8:30. It was such a wonderful experience that I was hooked. Read more

What got you into Oneness Blessing?

I am a teacher and consultant for a healing method called Spiritual Response Therapy. One day I had a client mention a book called "Awakening into Oneness". Speaking of Kundalini July 2011: Why Turbans and White?

Anyone who has been to Yoga Village when a Kundalini class is going on has seen the teacher and some of the students wearing white clothing and/or wearing a turban or head covering. It might look a little strange, but there’s a science behind it.

Why wear white in Kundalini Yoga?

It’s simple: the color white expands a person’s aura, or the electromagnetic field that surrounds every one of us. When our aura is big – we can expand it up to nine feet – we feel strong, balanced, grounded and radiant, and can more easily handle the challenges of our daily lives with neutrality, peace and calm.

When our aura is small, we feel depressed, weak, off-center and ineffective. It is believed that a strong aura can also help to protect us from diseases. Read more

What got you into yoga?

I began practicing Kundalini Yoga back in 2001. I just happened into a class at the YMCA taught by Martha Arruda. I was hooked from day one. It felt like coming home.

Soon I was taking 3 of Martha’s classes a week at various locations. I had recently gotten sober, after 20 yrs of pretty heavy drinking, and Kundalini Yoga made me feel great and alive. A year later I was able to release a heavy smoking addiction. The practice gave me my life back. I’ve been sober for 10 years by the grace of God, AA and Kundalini Yoga. It’s been such a blessing! Reduce Stress: Do Yoga!

in

Why does practicing yoga makes us feel less stressed, not only for the rest of the day but sometimes for the rest of the week? Scientists are finding that yoga asanas, or postures, actually help to reduce the stress hormones that are produced by the adrenal glands, including epinephrine and norepinephrine. According to WebMD, yoga also helps the body produce oxytocin, known as the “love hormone” since it builds trust and bond with each other.  Read the article here. Read more

Siest-asana

By Kerry Porter Wills

Summer is on the horizon and will be in view for many months to come. I have already begun some of my summer rituals—cold showers, iced sun tea and perhaps most importantly, an afternoon siesta.

It's common in the hotter regions of the world to dial it down during the hottest hours of the day. And even if our ramped-up American culture doesn't support the practice of resting for it's own sake, we can buck the system for our own well-being. I do, anyway. Feel free to join revolution.

Align and Be Well

The Fallout of Bad Posture

Poor posture, slouching and slumping cause our bodies to absorb the daily stress of poor body mechanics. These stressors can result in muscle spasms, spinal misalignment and pain.

The discs or cartilage between our vertebrae give our spine the flexibility to perform tasks. Repeated misaligned movements, however, make it easy for our vertebrae to settle into unwanted positions which tug on the muscles. Even small shifts in spinal alignment can cause big pain. Read more
